Weekend reading: 23/5/09

By The InvestorJune 7, 2009No Comments

Some interesting financial and investing posts I ran across this week, plus a few decent articles from the newspapers.

This week’s roundup is brought to you by a brilliant free mixtape I found on a music blog. Be warned it’s not your usual straight-laced financial fare!

Good reads from the money blogs

  • CBS Moneywatch explains how US folk can use TIPS (US index-linked government bonds) to protect against inflation. I’ll be writing something similar for UK readers about our Gilt linkers soon.
  • Weakonomics explains his love of financial calculators, and has discovered this free one for the iPhone.
  • Moolanomy makes the case for sinking funds.
  • Darwin’s Finance warns there are at least 10 ways to be the annoying bloke at work. (Better yet, leave the office!)
  • The Digerati Life recaps the economic legacy of the Bush administration.
  • The Oblivious Investor has his tongue in his cheek.

Generally UK-related articles from other websites and papers

  • Banking crisis superstar Robert Peston at the BBC branches out with a look at British Airways’ worst ever loss.
  • The Times explains the practical consequences of deflation for UK savers and investors.
  • The Financial Times says the drum is banging again for commodities, while David Schwarz looks at Carlco, a small cap and specialist manufacturer, as a long-term hold.
  • The Independent admits the housing market was a bubble. I guess two years late is better than never, eh?
  • Elsewhere in the same paper, Derek Pain asks if small caps will lead the recovery, but Mark Dampier turns again to investment grade bonds.
  • The Telegraph makes the case for China as an investment.
